Nissan Gears Up For New Revamped 2022 Nissan GT-R

A new report has stated that Japanese automaker Nissan has planned their GT-R to be a comprehensive internal combustion engine vehicle. That's a surprising reveal since it was commonly believed that the current generation, named the R35, would be replaced by an electrified Nissan R36. Instead, according to a BestCar statement, the next GT-R will be a massively reworked variant of the R35. It's a move many carmakers are turning to these days if they still hope to extend a low-volume production model at a reasonable price. This is the prevailing idea being bestowed upon the Subaru BRZ, Dodge Charger, Lexus IS, and the Nissan Z. Nissan is planning to make SUVs their focus as they move away from sedans.

Details revealed Kazutoshi Mizuno, the top engineer in charge of putting together the GT-R, had been developing a mild-hybrid version of Godzilla as the R36. However, Mizuno retired from Nissan, delaying that version's progress. Still, the R35's end-of-production date in 2022 was said to be a hard stop, so it seemed as if there would be a hiatus where the GT-R skipped at least one model year before the R36 was ready.

Where the Nissan Brand Goes In 2022

Further details revealed by Best Car, the next R36 will continue as a pure gasoline-powered car, starting right up where the R35 should begin production in early 2023. Nissan believes in tradition, so much so a single set break in GT-R model years is expected. This would be like the one year leap between the R34 and R35. The article also asserts that a gasoline-only GT-R might be made feasible due to Nissan's strong place in EV and e-Power hybrid businesses. Fuel economy and emissions savings on those fronts can help support the GT-R bringing down the average in fleet calculations.

Coming Closer To the Nissan EV Collection

Shoppers can rest assured the R36 will linger as a gasoline-only vehicle for only so much longer, especially if the generation continues as long as the R35. We can expect constant improvements as Nissan has made with the current generation of Nissan vehicles, and we can expect the process to remain the same for the next wave of electrified Nissan products set to make their way to customers in the coming years.
