Mitsubishi Has Upgraded its PHEV Powertrain For the 2021 Eclipse Cross

Written By, Brad R

When Mitsubishi releases the Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross, it will be part of the next generation for the Mitsubishi product. The second-gen will have some differences, as it has drawn inspiration from the e-Evolution concept that debuted at the Tokyo Motor Show in 2017. This will be the second Mitsubishi model to gain a plug-in hybrid electric powertrain. The word from Mitsubishi us they will also improve the Outlander PHEV as well. The goal for the Mitsubishi brand is to continue to expand its lineup with new EV options. The expansion of the electric vehicle is becoming more common, but Mitsubishi is making the push to be one of them.

The Evolving EV Choices Made By Mitsubishi

The Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is expected to debut in 2021. The compact crossover coupe is inspired by the 2017 e-Evolution Concept with a "radically changed front and rear design" according to Mitsubishi. The brand is looking to offer an SUV that creates some pop to attract buyers. The taillights are changed to have a sleek style and the bumper, roof-mounted wing have been refreshed. The side skirts have possibly been changed, however, the spy shots of the prototype only show so much. Reports have the 2.4-Liter four-cylinder petrol engine with two electric motors. Customers that don't want the PHEV option, they can opt for the powertrain option that is expected to remain the same; the 1.5-Liter engine that hits 152 horsepower and 184 lb-ft of torque.

“The new design draws inspiration from the Mitsubishi e-Evolution Concept, emphasizing the strength and dynamics from our SUV heritage while enhancing the cleanliness and elegance of a coupe-like SUV. The Eclipse Cross is the first step toward the next generation of Mitsubishi Design, and there is so much more to come,” said design chief Seiji Watanabe.

More On What To Expect For the Eclipse Cross

The new 2021 Mitsubishi Eclipse Cross is going to be out before 2020 according to the brand. By April 2021, the plug-in hybrid version is expected to debut in April 2021 or possibly before. The changes will also include a facelift to go along with a refreshed cabin that makes the appearance stand out. The 2.4-Liter engine has grown from the 2.0-Liter engine that came out in 2019. The sales have not seen the best numbers for the previous model year, this change will help to create some new buzz and welcome more buyers.
