Ultra-fuel-efficient Cars That Will Save You Some Green

2016 Models

2016 Chevy Malibu and Malibu Hybrid

The all-new 2016 Chevy Malibu received a variety of upgrades that weren’t available on previous Malibu models. The 2016 Malibu is a mid-size car that is available as a hybrid or non-hybrid. The non-hybrid Malibu has two engine options, a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder ECOTEC engine or a 250-horsepower 2.0-liter 4-cylinder engine. The 1.5-liter engine gets an average of 27 mpg in the city and 36 mpg highway and the 2.0 liter engine gets 22 city and 33 highway mpg

The 2016 Chevy Malibu is also available as a hybrid. The Malibu Hybrid is powered by a 1.8-liter 4-cylinder engine paired with a 1.5 kWh lithium-ion that gets 182 horsepower and 47 mpg in the city and 46 mpg on the highway. The Chevy Malibu Hybrid is backed by a 3-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an 8-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.  

2016 Chevy Spark EV

The 2016 Chevy Spark EV is a fully-electric version of the gas-powered Chevy Spark car. The 2016 Spark EV is highly recommended and automotive sites like Car and Driver, Edmunds and Autoblog, have all given it a 5 out of 5 overall rating. The 2016 Chevy Spark EV is powered by a 19 kWh 400 V lithium-ion battery that provides the Spark with has an EPA-estimated rating of 119 miles per gallon equivalent (MPGe). Additionally, the Spark is available with DC Fast Charging option, which can charge the battery 80 percent full in only 20 minutes when at a fast charging station.

The 2016 Chevy Spark is backed by an 8-year or 100,000-mile warranty on the battery and a 3-year or 36,000-mile limited basic warranty.

2016 Kia Optima and Optima Hybrid

The 2016 Kia Optima is an extremely fuel efficient midsize car that is available as a hybrid or non-hybrid model. When equipped with the standard 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine, the non-hybrid Kia Optima has an average fuel economy of 25 mpg city and 37 mpg highway. However, there are two other engine options, and the Optima’s available 1.6-liter 4-cylinder engine is the most fuel efficient offering an increased fuel economy of 28 mpg city and 39 mpg highway.

Those that love Kia Optima, but want to use as little gas as possible should consider the 2016 Optima Hybrid. The Optima Hybrid has a 2.4-liter 4-cylinder engine in combination with a 270 V lithium polymer rechargeable battery. Together, the engine and the battery generate 199 horsepower and give the car an excellent fuel economy of 36 mpg in the city and 40 mpg on the highway.

Both Optima models are backed by Kia’s industry-leading warranty with a 5-year or 60,000-mile  basic warranty and the powertrain is backed by a 10-year or 100,000-mile warranty. The battery on the Optima Hybrid is backed by an 8-year or 100,000-mile warranty.

2017 Models

2017 Chevy Volt

The 2017 model year Chevy Volt has been upgraded with some excellent features that weren’t available on the 2016 model. The Chevy Volt is a hybrid car with an 18.4 kWh 300 V lithium-ion and a 1.5-liter 4-cylinder engine. The engine and battery combination has a 420-mile range and the battery alone can power the car for 53 miles. The 2017 Chevy Volt has an estimated combined MPGe of 106 miles and many comfortable interior features.

The Volt is equipped with regenerative breaking and it was given the 2016 Green Car of the Year Award. The Chevy Volt is backed by a 3-year or 36,000-mile basic warranty, a 5-year or 60,000-mile powertrain warranty and an 8-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.  

2017 Mitsubishi i-Miev

The Mitsubishi i-Miev is the second completely electric vehicle on this list. The 2017 Mitsubishi i-Miev has a 16 kWh 330 V lithium-ion battery which generates up to 66 horsepower. The i-Miev can travel 62 miles on a full charge and its regenerative braking system helps it get a combined MPGe of 112 miles. Like the Spark, the i-Miev is available with a fast charging port that will charge the battery 80 percent in just 30 minutes.

As an electric car, the Mitsubishi i-Miev is backed by a slightly different warranty than the Mirage or Mirage G4. The i-Miev is backed by a 3-year or 36,000-mile limited basic warranty and an 8-year or 100,000-mile battery warranty.

2017 Mitsubishi Mirage and Mirage G4

This year, the Mitsubishi Mirage lineup expanded to include two Mirage models, the Mirage and the Mirage G4, both of which offer superior fuel economy and super-low Greenhouse Gas Emissions that make the Mirage one of the top environmentally conscious gas-powered vehicles in the industry.

Both subcompact Mirage models have a 78-horsepower 1.2-liter 3-cylinder engine that averages 37 mpg in the city and 43 mpg when on the highway. Both vehicles are nearly identical, however the Mirage G4 has a sedan body and the Mirage has a hatchback. The Mirage and Mirage G4 are supported by Mitsubishi's phenomenal warranties that offer the same term length as Kia. The Mitsubishi warranty is a 5-year or 60,000-mile new vehicle limited warranty and a 10-year or 100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty.

2017 Models Coming Soon

Chevy Bolt

The 2017 Chevy Bolt is expected to be available later this fall or winter of next year year. The fully electric 2017 Chevy Bolt  is said to get an astonishing 200 miles per battery charge and is giving the Tesla Model S a run for its money as the Bolt offers the same awesome fuel economy, or MPGe, but it is much more affordable and will be available much sooner.

Chrysler Pacifica and Pacifica Hybrid

The all-new 2017 Chrysler Pacifica is currently the newest and one of the most popular minivans in the United States. While the Pacifica has one of the best fuel economies among minivans, a hybrid version of the Pacifica is coming this fall, yes, you read that right, a hybrid minivan. The hybrid will run on a 3.6-liter V-6, a 16-kWh battery pack, and a twin-electric-motor pack. The Pacifica Hybrid will generate 260 horsepower and it will have an 80 MPGe in the city, but highway numbers haven’t been released yet. The purely electric range is 30 miles and the battery can fully charge in just two hours with a 240-volt electric plug.

Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV

The Outlander PHEV will be the most fuel efficient four-wheel drive SUV and it will be available in the United States this fall. The four-wheel drive Outlander Hybrid vehicle will have a 2.0-liter 4-cylinder gasoline engine paired with two electric batteries that run on a 12kWh lithium-ion battery pack. The Outlander PHEV can travel up to 32 miles on just electric driving, however the MPGe is still not known.
