The Good and Bad of the Chevy Blazer RS. It’s something to think about with the new Chevrolet Blazer, available in a variety of trims. As usual, Chevrolet keeps the goodies for later trims, and the RS is the second-to-highest trim of the lineup. Chevy calls it the “Camaro of SUVs” or a “muscle car SUV”. Well, now that the vehicle is out and about, it’s time to take a closer look. What’s Good? What’s Not-So-Good? Read on to learn more about the Chevrolet Blazer RS.
First, the Good Stuff
Just as Chevrolet would have us believe, the Chevy Blazer does look like a Camaro on a larger frame. Not only does it come with sharp style regardless of the trim, but the RS adds a little more. The standard mean mug of the front fascia comes with slim headlights, bulging hood, and a massive black grille. Upping the ante with the RS trim, consumers will get a more aggressive looking exterior with a High-Gloss Black hexagonal design on the grille, black roof rails, and consumers can add on 21-inch gloss black wheels (for $1,000) that are so much nicer to look at than the stock 20-inch wheels the Blazer comes with. Plus there’s a little convenience for opening up the trunk with a hands-free liftgate when piling in groceries, sports equipment, or what-have-you.
The Chevrolet Blazer RS also gets one up over other trims with its powerful 3.6-liter V6 engine. This engine is optional on all trims but consumers get it standard with the RS and Premier trims. Able to generate 308 horsepower and 270 lb-ft of torque, the engine has been optimized with a dual overhead camshaft design and variable valve timing to increase horsepower and fuel economy. It may not be a lot, like 500+, but the Blazer still drives like a muscle car from start to finish – if driving in a straight line. This is an SUV, so hitting 60 mph takes 6.8 seconds, but the optional all-wheel-drive option definitely makes for a great addition.
Chevrolet also added some nice technology to the Blazer RS trim, starting out with an 8-inch touchscreen with a user-friendly layout and quick response time. With Apple CarPlay and Android Auto capability, the RS keeps eyes on the road and off the phone. Plus, with color-coordinated buttons, it’s easy to change options and access features without needing to look away once muscle memory starts to kick in. Oh, and for those who do live on their phone, consumers can add an available Wi-Fi hotspot with available 4G LTE to the Chevrolet Blazer.
Ok, So What’s Not-So-Good?
Inside the Chevy Blazer RS trim is leather upholstery, always a plus. Talking about a plus, the front driver and passenger seats are heated for cold nights, and so is the steering wheel. When driving on the road and some jerk wants to flash their brights, drivers won’t be bothered with the auto-dimming rearview mirror, and for those that like mood light, there’s some ambient lighting options in the RS. It all sounds good, but many Chevy SUVs tend to have an excess of plastic parts. The Chevrolet Blazer is no exception, and one would think the RS would get better treatment.
Some drivers aren’t very fond of the nine-speed automatic transmission found on the Chevy Blazer RS. If anything, nine speeds sounds a little much for an engine that barely breaks 300 horsepower, so if anything, we just think Chevrolet bit off a little more than they could chew with this one. It’s not a deal-breaker and the shift-mounted gear options still offer the ability to shift manually for those that like that classic feel.
What may turn off most consumers is the price. The Chevrolet Blazer starts at $29,995 (plus destination fee), and we know how much Chevrolet likes to keep all the good options in add-on packages.
