Tesla expands past car and aero industries with new Solar Roof tiles

Tesla Successfully Goes Beyond Cars with New Solar Roof

Written By, Chloe L.

Tesla isn’t just saving itself for the auto world and one of the company’s most anticipated products, the Tesla Solar Roof, (a solar roof made of tiles that look like shingles) was finally released a few weeks ago. Like other Tesla products, the Tesla Solar Roof is innovative, ground-breaking and it will likely revolutionize the way America uses and accesses energy, but this time in their homes, rather than on the streets.

Tesla’s new product embodies a few of the same characteristics people love about their line of electric cars.

  • First and foremost, the product is efficient. When properly equipped, the new Tesla Solar Roof makes it possible for homeowners to power their homes completely by solar power.
  • Secondly, the product is attractive. Tesla doesn’t want to make a product that a consumer feels like they need to sacrifice style for efficiency. Tesla wants consumers to want the product for its look and its efficiency and Tesla’s cars as well as the new roof look like high-end products.
  • Third, the tiles do require special installation,, which makes installing them more expensive (for now) than alternative products.
  • Fourth, it may be a few years before consumers and other companies jump on the bandwagon, but without a doubt, it will slowly become as popular and desired as Tesla’s vehicles are today.

So how good and practical really is the product? Think of the new solar roof like the first Tesla car that come out. It’s excellent, but it is not in everybody’s budget. Consumer Reports did a few different cost comparisons based on home size and home location and without a doubt, the cost to replace a roof with a Tesla Solar Roof was more expensive, but in a few cases, the roof paid for itself fairly quickly.

In addition to the news about the Tesla Solar Roof, Tesla recently revealed some news about the Tesla Model 3. The news came as a bit of “drag” to some consumers, but it’s still a pretty impressive vehicle. The new Tesla Model 3 will be priced around $35,000, which is nearly $30,000 less than the Tesla Model S, but it will be a little bit slower (0-60 mph in 5.6 seconds compared to 0-60 mph in 2.9 seconds) and it is a bit smaller. But again, it is nearly half the price.
