Subaru Prepares To Unveil All-New 2022 Subaru BRZ

Written By, Brad R

2020 has felt so long that the new 2022 Subaru models are arriving this year. That's right; the 2022 Subaru BRZ will be formally unveiled to the world when its production debut comes on November 18, 2020. The next-generation Subaru vehicles are made with a Toyota Motor Group partnership that began earlier this year back in February 2020. The first redesign of the BRZ since it first debuted back in 2012. The Toyota brand has crafted a similar vehicle known as the 86 that will also be launched in sync with the Subaru BRZ.

The Japanese automaker has revealed that the next-generation BRZ will come in the form of an all-new 2022 model year. The 2022 BRZ will be the first broadcast online due to COVID-19 restrictions. No one quite knows what the exact vehicle will look like, but a well-disguised prototype was found driving through southeast Michigan. We've gotten word that the powertrain should offer around 250 horsepower in a turbocharged flat-four engine.

A Suprise Is Awaiting Fans of the BRZ

The all-new BRZ is going to offer owners something special, though the vehicle is a mechanical copy of the Toyota 86, another vehicle that mirrors the BRZ so closely they are known as the "Toyobaru" twins. A revised platform that offers revamped styling in both the interior and the exterior is present. The debut of these vehicles is expected to come out this fall. Toyota remains very close-mouthed regarding this all-new vehicle until the date, later this month, it will be first shown.

What little we've heard suggests that most of the platform enhancements will come from Toyota's side of the twins' joint development program, while the powertrain will again be sourced from Subaru. This runs counter some rumors we've heard that longitudinal engines from Toyota's portfolio, which includes turbocharged four-cylinders, could potentially make their way under the hood.

What Is the Competition For the BRZ?

Expected enhancements come from Toyota's side of the twins' joint development program, while the powertrain will remain built and created from Subaru. Encouragingly, the all-new Subaru BRZ prototype found on public roads was being benchmarked against a turbocharged Ford Mustang. Some people are expecting the new Subaru vehicle to compare to some of the more well-known brands, like the Ford Mustang, but time will tell. The lighter Subaru coupes won't need quite as much strength to keep up with the bigger, heavier pony car, so expecting the twins to contend with the Mustang's 300 plus horsepower is limited, but customers will want more than just a powerful engine. And that's what Subaru is counting on.
