NowCar Fiat 500 Wins 2022 GQ Car of the Year

New Fiat 500 Wins City Car of the Year by GQ

Written By, Jordan R

Does anyone remember back to 2019 when Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) decided to invest $800 million into development of the new Fiat BEV 500? Back then, FCA was still on its own, and the automotive group as a whole was more or less avoiding electric vehicles (EVs) and battery-electric vehicles (BEVs). Since then, plans have changed, and after the FCA-PSA Group merger, now Stellantis, recently released business plan Dare Forward 2030, with the objective to Stellantis will be release 75 BEVs over the next six years. Starting out with a bang, the new Fiat 500 fully-electric vehicle is already showing some good fortune for BEVs everywhere. The 2022 GQ Car Awards recently concluded, and the new Fiat 500 was been named City Car of the Year.

“Picking up our 25th international award from such an acclaimed title is a landmark moment in the ever-evolving success story of New 500. It is some feat that 65 years on from the launch of the original Cinquecento, the phenomenal work of our designers and engineers has allowed us to nod to our past and hold onto the 500’s core values, while paving in-roads in the future of sustainable urban mobility.” - Greg Taylor, Fiat UK Managing Director

This accolade by GQ is just one more in the long line of awards for Fiat’s first-ever fully-electric car, bringing the number up to 25. For those that haven’t heard about GQ, and let’s face it, this is a blog for people focused on automobiles and not fashion, GQ is the leading men’s lifestyle magazine and website for information on men’s style, grooming, fitness, the best products to keep those rugged good looks, great travel destinations, sports, politics, and just general news for the average guy. Although not widely publicized on the website, GQ has a focus on automobiles, too, and that brings us to the 2022 GQ Car Awards.

When it comes to the 14th installment of the GQ Car Awards, things were a little different with the upsurge of EVs being developed by automakers everywhere. With many claiming an all-electric vehicle can hold its own in a rally race, how can GQ ignore the power and capability of an electric motor? The panel of experts judging vehicles this year were looking for vehicles that inspire and get the heart racing with excitement. The new Fiat 500’s charm, effortless performance, and chic design impressed GQ editors the most, with GQ editor Paul Henderson stating that the vehicle not only calls back to the retro style of the Fiat Cinquecento, but is a great vehicle that is “romantic and reliable”, calling it “cute” as well as “clever” and “cool”,

The original Fiat Cinquecento was released back in 1957, and the new 500 marks the third generation of this iconic car. In the past, Fiat played with the idea of alternative fuel in the past, but none were as successful as the new Fiat 500 is today. Originally, the name was “500e”, and we’re not sure why the name didn’t stick after Fiat pulled the original 500 from North America in 2019. Then again, according to the USA website, the 500X is all that’s available at the moment. The new Fiat 500 is the first model in Fiat’s history to be fully-electric, but it won’t be the last, as we mentioned with Dare Forward 2030.
