How to Keep a New Car Driving and Looking Like New

Written By, Harley R

Getting a new car is always fun and exciting. However, keeping a new car in good condition may not be as fun, but regular car maintenance is imperative to having a long-lasting, problem-free vehicle.

Therefore, here are some important things to keep in mind in order to keep your new car looking and driving like new for the next few years.

Regular Oil Changes

Regular oil changes are the standard maintenance for a new car and they are a must. How frequently you need an oil change will depend on your vehicle and the amount you drive. The typical recommendation is to get an oil change every 3,000-5,000 miles. There are some better types of engine oil that can last longer between oil changes, like synthetics.

Keep in mind, this is just an oil change -- you need to regularly check you oil on your own! Even though your new car is probably in tip-top shape, you don’t “know” the car yet, so you should regularly check your oil level, too.

Other Regular Maintenance

Don’t let oil changes hog the limelight of regular maintenance. When you do an oil change, let it also serve as a reminder to check the other parts of your car like your tire pressure and windshield wiper fluids, belts and battery terminals.

Wash Your Car Inside and Outside

Love the exterior of your new car? It won’t stay new forever so you will need to take care of it to keep it looking fresh and new. You should try to wash your car regularly and apply a fresh coat of wax that will protect the finish.

Don’t forget about the inside either. Vacuum and wipe down your car’s surfaces regularly. Leather should be cleaned with the proper leather products. If you got a stain on your interior, clean it right away.

Yearly maintenance checks

No matter how many miles you drive, getting your car an annual check-up is very important, especially to a new car. Make sure you get a thorough inspection that requires the service agent to check the following: transmission fluids, the car battery, belts, engine filter, wiper blades, steering, suspension, and car brakes.

Additionally, regular maintenance checks will help you stay in the know about the potential car repairs or fixes you may need in the future. This will help you avoid big and expensive problems that occur all at once.

Other tips for maintaining your new car

Make sure you read through your vehicle's manual. The best way to keep up with your car is to know it well. It is key to never ignore a light on the dash or unusual smell/sound coming from your vehicle. If there seems to be an issue with the car, get it checked as soon as possible.
