Mercedes-AMG One F1 Begins Production Overseas

Written By, Jordan R

Back in June 2022, Mercedes-Benz shared with us its new Mercedes-AMG ONE Formula 1 vehicle model. Said to be a hypercar, it runs on the same efficient Formula 1 hybrid drive technology from the race tracks, but now that power can be in the hands of the consumer. Not only this, but it’s a hybrid vehicle, bringing the lineup into a more electrified stride on a strong note. As we near the end of summer, production of the Mercedes-Benz AMG One hypercar has already started at a dedicated facility in Coventry, U.K. for customer purchase, but so far only overseas.

They always get the good stuff when a new model goes international overseas. Celebrating 55 years, the new Mercedes-AMG ONE Formula 1, and with the original Formula 1 team based in the U.K., it makes sense that the new Mercedes F1 is built on home grounds. We know, the F1 team races under a German license, but you shouldn’t ever forget your roots. Several Jeep models are manufactured outside of the U.S., but the off-road automaker started with its first model, the Wrangler, for the U.S. Army. The Mercedes F1 team race cars are built in Brackley, northwest of London, and power units for the vehicles are sourced from Brixworth nearby. So, mostly a U.K. car.

As we said, the vehicle is a hybrid model, and seems to have some nice power output. Powered by a turbocharged 1.6-liter V6 engine and four electric motors, as opposed to the racecar model with a V6 and motor generator powering the rear wheels. For this setup, one motor has been paired with the turbocharger, another acts as a link between the engine and crank case, and then the last two electric motors sending power front wheels. With power being sent to all four wheels, all-wheel drive will most likely be an option for consumers.

With the V6 engine able to generate 574 horsepower, the 120-kW electric motors mounted the engine generate a total of 326 horsepower, and the electric motor attached to the engine generates 163 each. All over the internet, there are claims of over 1000 horsepower in total, ranging from 1050 -1070 horsepower, but the math adds up to 1063 horsepower as the current combined output for the 2023 Mercedes-AMG ONE F1. With a new top speed of 218 mpg, the One can accelerate from 0-62 mph in 2.9 seconds.

Other engineering aspects going into the One had the mechanical valve springs replaced with pneumatic valve springs, mounted the engine in mid-engine position in front of the rear axle, installed a new, automated 7-speed manual transmission, and developed a system to keep the battery from overheating. When dealing with a high-voltage battery, overheating can become a problem, but this battery is kept cool by a coolant that constantly circulates through the entire battery and around each battery cell. These days, many high-performance powertrains require some kind of system to help keep things cool, and we expect this to become a common theme for high-performing hybrid vehicles, electric vehicles (EVs), and battery electric vehicles (BEVs) in the next few years.
