NowCar GMC Hummer EV Pickup Production

GMC Starts Production of GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1

Written By, Jordan R

The newest race in the automotive industry is happening. If an automaker needed a way to break into the market of plug-in hybrids and electric vehicles (EVs), now is the time to do it. A whole new EV segment has been gaining some attention, and competition is already heating up. Just about every automaker out there with a pickup truck in the lineup are throwing their hat into the ring and debuting all-new electric pickup trucks. Just before the end of the year, GMC teased it’s all new GMC HUMMER EV Pickup and GMC HUMMER EV SUV. Although details are slim, the first GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 pickup trucks have been produced at Factory ZERO and any consumers who ordered one can expect their delivery soon.

“We brought this truck to market with speed and agility and brought GM another step closer to an all-electric future…With our Ultium Platform as the foundation for a broad range of applications, the GMC HUMMER EV offers our customers the ultimate in capability and performance.” - GM President Mark Reuss

That name may be familiar – Ultium. If not in the know, General Motors (GM) owns Chevrolet. Thus, any tech the parent develops will find its way into Chevy models in the lineup. The same can be said for the Hyundai Motor Group and the Electric-Global Modular Platform (E-GMP) that is currently the underpinnings of the all-electric Kia EV6 SUV. “Ultium” isn’t the name of the platform but more so the name of the new batteries GM has been producing for future EVs. In the form of pouch-style battery cells, Ultium energy options range from 50 to 200 kWh, with a range of about 400 miles, and are able to accelerate from 0-60 mph in 3 seconds. That’s amazing for an EV!

The VIN 001 of the Edition 1 GMC HUMMER EV Pickup was already auctioned off way back on March 27, 2021, at Barrett-Jackson for $2.5 million. All proceeds went to the Tunnel to Towers Foundation, an organization established to honor the memory of Sept. 11 first responder Stephen Siller. The organization does some wonderful things, building mortgage-free, accessible smart homes for veterans with catastrophic injuries. Tunnel to Towers also provides mortgage-free homes for Gold Star families and the families of first responders killed in the line of duty.

Back to something more uplifting, the GMC HUMMER EV Edition 1 comes with some notable features worth mentioning. Love at first sight with an Interstellar White exterior, the interior contrasts this with a unique Lunar Horizon interior. Powered by Ultium energy, this all-electric pickup truck has a GM-estimated horsepower of up to 1000 units and 11,500 lb-ft of torque. Other signature features include a (1) 4 Wheel Steer featuring CrabWalk that enables diagonal movement of the vehicle for greater maneuverability on any terrain, a (2) Adaptive Air Suspension with Extract Mode to raise the suspension height by six inches for clearing boulders and when crossing bodies of water, (3) Watts to Freedom, a feature the driver can activate for that aforementioned acceleration time of 0-60 mph in 3 seconds, and (4) Super Cruise, the closest thing we have to fully-autonomous vehicles, allowing the driver to drive “hands-free” for more than 200,000 miles.

Edition 1 models are currently sold out, but it will give some consumers time to save up. The starting MSRP of the GMC HUMMER EV is $110,295 (plus destination fee). What a wallop! Find out what deals you can get to save money when you shop for a new car online at NowCar.
