Get a Real Work Truck with the Ram 1500 Classic

Written By, Jordan R

When it comes to shopping for a truck, consumers come from many different paths and all want a truck for a different reason. Some people just like the feel of a truck, a small cabin with a truck bed if you ever need the storage, and some customization options with aftermarket accessories. With the latest Ram 1500 “DT” – that’s the insider nickname for the next-generation Ram 1500 – the Ram 1500 became an all-new truck with a taste for adventure, able to tackle off-road trails and still handle heavy payloads. At the same time, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) made the wise decision to keep the original Ram 1500 in production, called the Ram 1500 Classic, and there’s a pretty clear reason why.

Work trucks.

Unless you had a friend that came from a family who liked to drive a pickup truck, or grew up around people that drove a truck, then the first thought many people have when they think of a truck is a semi-truck. In other words, they think of “work”, or “commercial”, or a vehicle used for a business that needs to haul lots of equipment and materials, like construction, HVAC/Plumbing, and carpenters. At its core, that’s what the Ram 1500 and its counterparts, the Ram Heavy Duty Trucks that made the real tough jobs a breeze, really are – work trucks.

In 2018, Ram proved that the Ram 1500 can be so much more than a work truck, with a slew of upgrades that made it a “lifestyle” truck. FCA-affiliated custom auto parts MOPAR even got in on the fun with a new catalog dedicated to the Ram 1500, full of 300 new parts to help customize and personalize the Ram. If you think that means the original Ram 1500 is now just an after-thought, think again. The Ram 1500 Classic has been in production since the release of the new generation light duty pickup truck, and the 1500 Classic is here to stay, at least for now.

Price is a large factor here. If just looking to get a work truck that can handle small jobs, the base trim of the Ram 1500 is a Tradesman with a two-wheel-drive configuration, a 3.6-liter V6 under the hood, a regular cab, and a six-foot-four-inch truck bed. It may seem a little bare bones, but it gets the job done, and for a small business on a budget, the 2021 Ram 1500 Classic Tradesman is a perfect find with a starting MSRP of $30,145 (plus destination fee). Still the same as last year, zero upgrades, it’s a classic after all, this light duty pickup truck still came with options.

Although not yet confirmed for the 2021 model, the 2020 Ram 1500 Classic had the option of being powered by the legendary V6 EcoDiesel engine, capable of towing up to 12,560 pounds. The pickup truck also got its own appearance package, the Warlock, that added a bold grille with R-A-M lettering, front, and rear powder-coated bumpers, a 1-in. factory ride height lift, 20-inch semi-gloss black aluminum wheels, black wheel flares, LED fog lamps, projector headlamps with dark bezels, LED rear tail lamps, black badging, tow hooks, unique hood decals and heavy-duty rear shocks, and special Warlock decals. It was this truck’s version of a black-out package, and it really gives the Ram 1500 Classic a high-class feel - the addition of the Ram 1500 Classic’s Luxury Group doesn’t hurt either.
