FCA Debuts New Augmented Reality App Owner's Manual

Written By, Jordan R

Here at NowCar, we love hearing about new technology. It’s always neat to learn about how the automotive industry is incorporating the technological advancements of consumer products and services, like being able to link our phones via Bluetooth for hands-free phone calls and texts, mirroring our smartphone desktop on our infotainment screen, and enabling the use of smart devices like Amazon Alexa and Google Home to connect consumers to their phone, car, and home. In a world of interconnectivity, things are going digital, and that counts for automobile owner’s manuals. Always being misplaced and hard to navigate when a questionable light or signal comes on, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) is making it easier for consumers to learn about their new vehicle and diagnosing issues with the Know & Go Mobile App.

Interestingly enough, it shows how listening to the little guy can sometimes lead to a huge success. The Know & Go Mobile App was conceived during FCA’s first-ever Pitch Night earlier this year, where teams made up of FCA employees could pitch ideas for R&D, and that’s how this mobile app came about. Developed to give consumers an immersive experience for learning more about their vehicles, Know & Go makes use of some sci-fi tech, augmented reality. Not virtual, mind you – this is more like super imposing holograms or images via the camera smartphone, like Pokémon Go.

That mobile game may have been one of the most popular uses of augmented reality in recent times, and now automobiles are catching on. When using the Know & Go Mobile App, all a consumer needs to do is activate the app and allow access to the phone’s camera. Then, by scanning the interior (or exterior, we assume) of the vehicle with the phone camera, Know & Go acts like Shazam by picking up information of what the camera is seeing and then recalling name and a description, presented as a popup overlaid on the image on screen. Users can manually tap to learn about a feature, but the app is intelligent and able to bring undiscovered features to the consumer’s attention.

Debuting for the first time on the 2021 Ram 1500 Rebel TRX, owners of the Rebel TRX will be able to experience this digital owner’s manual before anyone else. The Know & Go mobile app has many other features aside from the use of augmented-reality and discovering features the consumers may find interesting, as well as providing information on the vehicle. For those who prefer analog or tangible manuals, there are feature-specific owner’s manual pages for going a little old school. For those that want to learn more about a specific feature in addition to a name and a description, some feature overviews come with how-to videos when applicable.

“We created the Know & Go app as a way for customers to interact with and learn about their vehicles throughout their ownership lifecycle and personal experiences,” - Carolina Harris, Feature Innovation Manager – FCA and co-creator of Know & Go

Always looking to better connect with the consumer, Fiat Chrysler Automobiles does it again with the Know & Go Mobile App. The Ram 1500 Rebel TRX may have sold out of the first round of preorders, but you can always order a Ram Rebel TRX when you shop for a car online with NowCar.
