Chevy Wants To Curb Smartphone Use

Written By, Brad R.

Chevrolet is working to support many drivers who can’t resist using their smartphones while driving. To help curb this behavior in drivers, Chevrolet has developed a brand new app to assist drivers in keeping their eyes on the road. The app is known as the “Call Me Out” app for Android smartphones and will use new technology to attempt to discourage cellular use, or cellular abuse rather. The app will be able to tell through the phone’s accelerometer and GPS to know if a phone is traveling at high speeds, which will trigger alerts to go off if the driver uses their phone. The app is part of a larger campaign to slow down smartphone abuse while driving.

Will This New App Slow Down Cell Phone Use?

Drivers might be hesitant at add another app or be resistant to the idea that an app could prevent their smartphone use while driving. They should first know the advantages of having the app. The Call Me Out app allows for users to add voice notes of loved ones and friends that will sound off when a driver is driving. Any driving speed more than five miles per hour will prompt the personalized audio messages to be heard if the phone is being used. Usually the messages recorded mention how it’s not worth answering or responding to any texts or calls while driving. The driver is therefore “called out”. This useful app is needed more than ever with highways and streets that have more vehicles and more distracted drivers than ever.

“Today’s vehicles offer a range of active safety features like Lane Keep Assist and Forward Automatic Braking that help drivers stay more aware of their surroundings. But we also know the vehicle is only one element. Chevy’s Call Me Out app gives drivers another great tool to reinforce good driving behaviors — and as a mom of a teenage daughter, I personally know how important it is to model good driving behaviors and encourage others to do the same.”  said Tricia Morrow, Chevy safety engineer.

Driving Needs All Your Attention

So, what is the problem of drivers using smartphones? This is not a young driver problem, as pointed out by a 2018 Research Now survey. Up to 84 percent of people say that distracted driving while using a phone is very dangerous, yet 90 percent of drivers reveal to being part of that same problem. This particular fact is what helped to motivate Chevrolet to create the “Call Me Out” app, pursuit of curbing such widespread distracted driving. The app, while it has a social aspect of adding other accounts and earning points, has a main focus to be as a deterrent towards drivers losing concentration while behind the wheel. There’s also a reward system based on points that a driver can accumulate over time with a scoreboard and ranking system. App users can follow additional users and measure their success at not using their phone and being a distracted driver.

Call Me Out Is Ready For Your Android Phone Now!

Only available currently as an Android app, the app can only do so much to help restrict smartphone usage. Chevy has done their part to assist drivers of the dangers of smartphone use and the consequences of driving distracted. Call Me Out can be located and downloaded on the Google Play Store for free. Currently, the iOS version of the app is set to come out eventually for iPhone users. Chevy is working hard to produce safe vehicles with modern technology and safety features, but their best work might come as a result of helping drivers avoid the most dangerous new technology –  smartphones. We encourage adding this app and spreading the word of its benefits.

“As the father of two daughters, I am keenly aware of all the perils that my children face out in the world on a daily basis, and that is why it is so important for GM and Chevrolet to offer technologies that help all of us become safer drivers. With Call Me Out we are extending our commitment beyond the technologies integrated into GM and Chevy vehicles and are making the app available for Android phone users who drive other vehicle makes and models in an effort to help people change their driving behavior and make our roads safer,” - added Alan Batey, president of GM North America and head of Global Chevrolet.
