Best 3-Row SUV for Families by U.S. News & World Report Rankings

Written By, Jordan R

With how saturated the auto market is becoming with SUVs, crossovers, and trucks, consumers are finding all of the choices a little overwhelming when entering the market for a new car or truck. Two decades ago, SUVs were known as gas guzzlers that were only good for towing and cargo without sacrificing passenger or interior space for a payload. Crossovers weren’t even heard of yet, but as the years went on, automobile engineering and technology got better, powertrains and drivetrains improved, and now we have SUVs that can seat up to seven or eight people and still get pretty decent fuel economy, sometimes better than expected. Still, wouldn’t it be helpful if someone put a guide together of the best SUVs on the market today? U.S. News & World Report did just this with the “Best 3-Row SUV for Families” list.

If you never heard of it, U.S. News & World Report is a well-known publication that has been in business since 1933. Covering national and international news in a number of industries, U.S. News reports on Education, Health, Money, Travel, Cars, and Civics. Today, U.S. News & World Report is viewed as one of several global leaders in data analysis and information collection. The recent “Best 3-Row SUV for Families” list was put together with a focus on feature availability, passenger and cargo volume, safety and reliability ratings, and the reviews of top automotive critics.

More than half of the vehicles that made the list can be found easily when you shop for a car online at NowCar. Just put in the automaker and model and presto! You can find any of the below vehicles in minutes. Plus, one new and improved vehicle made the top of the list. Winning awards since its release, it’s the largest SUV in the lineup, the 2021 Kia Telluride grabbed the number one spot in the U.S. News & World Report “Best 3-Row SUV for Families” list with an overall score of 8.4/10 and a safety score of 9.5/10. We already know how well the Kia Telluride performs when it comes to safety, offering lane keep assist, a blind spot collision avoidance system, automatic emergency braking, rear cross traffic alert, a rear-view monitor with dynamic parking guidance, smart cruise control with stop & go, lane departure warning as a standard advanced automatic safety feature on every trim in the lineup. All of that safety for a starting MSRP of $32,190 (plus destination fee).

“The Kia Telluride is packed with available features that make life easier and a little bit safer for families…Standouts include front automatic braking, lane keep assist, tools for parents to set limits with teen drivers, and comfort and infotainment features like tri-zone climate control, Apple CarPlay/Android auto, and rear-seat sunshades.” - Jamie Page Deaton, executive editor of autos, U.S. News & World Report

The GMC Acadia was ranked #13 with an overall score of 7.3/10 and a safety score of 9.7/10, followed by the Dodge Durango at #12 with an overall score of 8/10 and a safety score of 8.3/10. Surprisingly, even after upgraded for the next generation, the Kia Sorento was ranked #8 with an overall score of 8.5/10; safety rating to be determined. The Volkswagen Atlas did well, landing in the top five (#5) with an overall score of 7.9/10 and a safety score of 9.4/10. Following the Volkswagen, or more so passing it, is the Buick Enclave, ranked #4 with an overall score of 7.9/10 and a safety score of 8.9/10, and the Chevrolet Traverse, ranked #3 with an overall score of 8/10 and a safety score of 9/10.
